briinthemorning: I come from the land of Patagoina puffy jackets. I live in a place dominated by tourism, craft beer, bikes, snow sports, outdoor activity and an abundance of other things I strive to avoid on a regular basis. When I was growing up in Bend, Ore. always knew it wasn’t where I fit, and upon leaving for four years and then finding myself back “home” once again I’m at a crossroads of who I am and where I live. This time around, leaving isn’t about going away to college and escaping my hometown, it’s about following a career path, it’s about rearranging my life and somehow that seems a whole lot more difficult. I used to call myself a tourist in my hometown, but now that I’ve been back for two years, secured myself a decent gig, a house, a group of people I care about and the Mayor knows my name, so I figure I’m a tourist no more. Here I am again, living in Bend, without a timeline or an escape plan. So here’s my outsider’s handbook. My musings on how it’s hard to fit in wherever you are and all of the ways that I don’t fit make me a novelty (and give me something interesting to write about).
